Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 31st of October.
Good morning, Sterling Heights.
🏘️ Community
Three women named Melissa launched a GoFundMe called Melissas for Hope on October 29th to support rebuilding efforts in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa affected their name—aiming to gather donations from thousands of Melissas and friends to change the narrative.
Their effort seeks to show that a name can also bring hope and positive action.
💼 Business
A Chicago-based investment firm purchased Project BarFly, owner of HopCat, and will help expand the restaurant chain while keeping its focus on value-priced food in friendly neighborhood settings.
HopCat, founded (in Grand Rapids in 2008), operates 12 restaurants in Michigan (including several in metro Detroit) and one in Lincoln, Nebraska.
🎭 Culture
F-Hole Wreckers ride in a restored 1984 Cadillac DeVille limousine hearse—one that carries their instruments and draws strong reactions—from local venues to play rockabilly tunes.
They will perform on Nov. 1 at the Caché Cocktail & Wine Bar during a Spellbound Halloween costume party.
🏥 Health
This Sunday, residents will set their clocks back as Daylight Saving Time ends - the extra hour of sleep may upset their body clock since sunset now comes at 5:30 p.m. and sunrise at 7 a.m., so it is advised to keep a regular sleep schedule and avoid screen time before bed.
