  • Over the weekend, bystanders rescued a mother and her two children after their car flipped into a pond in Shelby Township and trapped them inside.  WXYZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Meijer is offering more than two dozen school supplies for $1 or less and reinstating its 15% teacher discount—families and teachers in Sterling Heights can use a paper coupon with a school ID at local customer service desks until Sept. 7.  WXYZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Since July 14, tomatoes from Mexico carry a 21% tariff that may raise prices by 10% in our area. Local growers say the measure helps them compete with lower-cost imports—though the local tomato season means consumers might not see changes right away.  WXYZ
  • Gas prices in Michigan rose by 12 cents from last week to an average of $3.27 per gallon for regular unleaded—metro Detroit prices increased by an extra 5 cents during the same period. Drivers now pay about $49 for a full 15-gallon tank, with prices ranging from $3.06 in Marquette to $3.33 in Saginaw.  WXYZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The state’s water agency sent Oakland County a notice for breaking rules after releasing millions of gallons of untreated sewage from a basin into the river that flows through Sterling Heights — the notice warned that the county could face fines if it does not fix its system. Oakland County asked to meet with EGLE three days after the notice and may have to change its steps in the future — Macomb County welcomed the state action.  FOX 2 Detroit
