  • Sterling Heights will host Festa Italiana at Freedom Hill County Park from July 18 to July 20 with national and local music, a Sunday morning Mass, family fun and contests including Italian Queen and Italian Idol competitions. The festival opens at 6 p.m. Friday with a fireworks show at 10 p.m.—parking costs $10 per day.  Sterling Heights Sentry

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Three southeast Michigan beaches were closed due to high bacteria levels from storm water runoff and unknown sources while Veterans Memorial Park Beach had a contamination advisory—warning residents who planned lake outings for Fourth of July weekend to check official safety guidelines.  FOX 2 Detroit

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sterling Heights appointed Andrew Satterfield as the new chief of police effective July 14. Satterfield, (formerly with Troy Police Department) has 27 years of experience in law enforcement and will replace former chief Dale Dwojakowski, city manager Mark Vanderpool said.  Sterling Heights Sentry

HEALTH NEWS

  • Macomb County health officials announced that they found West Nile virus in a mosquito sample gathered this summer—no human cases have been reported yet. They advise residents to use insect repellent and remove standing water to reduce mosquito bites.  The Detroit News
