COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sterling Heights will start building Red Run Park on Red Run Street, offering six lighted pickleball courts, a basketball court, a dog park, a library kiosk and play areas. City officials will hold a groundbreaking ceremony today and expect the 15 acre park to open late October or early November.  The Detroit News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reports that Michigan drivers now pay about $4.86 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, up 84 cents statewide and 76 cents in metro Detroit. Buying a full 15-gallon tank costs around $73 — an increase of $22 from last year.  WXYZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michael Oommen, a senior at Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies, earned a $2,500 (General Dynamics Corp.) Scholarship in the first round of the National Merit Scholarship program. He plans to attend the University of Michigan and join ROTC.  Sterling Heights Sentry
  • Sterling Heights Public Library hosts the Paws for Reading program today from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. where children read aloud to therapy dogs (including Oliver, a 2-year-old golden retriever) that help build their reading skills.  Sterling Heights Sentry

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Box tree moths have been detected in Michigan, prompting Sterling Heights gardeners to inspect their boxwoods for green and yellow caterpillars with distinctive stripe patterns — experts advise treating plants with Bacillus thuringiensis every 10 to 14 days. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Road Commission of Macomb County begins resurfacing Mound Road from I-696 to 8 Mile Road today, reducing the roadway and a 696 ramp to one lane for 30 days. The $24 million project will keep traffic moving until federal funds support full reconstruction (business access remains available).  WXYZ

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Wild Birds Unlimited owners share bird feeding tips today to create a more enjoyable yard; they recommend beginners use seed cylinders and sunflower seeds to attract blue jays, cardinals, and goldfinches while using deterrents (like hot pepper-treated seed) to discourage squirrels.  Sterling Heights Sentry

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle has been named AL Rookie of the Month for March/April as announced on Monday morning. The 21-year-old posted strong stats (a .315 average over 130 at-bats) and secured an eight-year, $150 million contract extension that will take effect next season.  WXYZ
  • After a rally from a 3-1 deficit in the playoffs, the Pistons extended head coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s contract, announced by team president Trajan Langdon. The team, fresh off a win against the Magic, now advances to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round.  FOX 2 Detroit
  • The Michigan State High School Clay Target League kicked off its spring season today with over 2,400 students from 140 schools, including many from metro Detroit.
