  • More than 100 residents honored Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy during Sterling Heights’ second annual Unity Walk on Jan. 19, marching from City Hall to Stevenson High School (a nod to historic civil rights marches) to reaffirm the city’s commitment to equality and justice.  Sterling Heights Sentry

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Jan. 16, more than 100 Utica Community Schools students visited Sterling Heights Fire Department Station No. 5 to learn about firefighting careers. They practiced CPR, rope and knot tying & explored career benefits such as nine 24-hour shifts and six-figure salary opportunities for public service.  Sterling Heights Sentry

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sterling Heights City Council scheduled a public hearing on the Sheetz proposal for March 3 at 7 p.m. at City Hall; the plan calls for a gas station/convenience store on three acres at Mound Road and Metro Parkway, estimated at $10 million with 35 jobs but facing local opposition.  Sterling Heights Sentry

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bitter temperatures in metro Detroit today cause wind chills to feel as low as -20°F and raise the risk of frostbite in 10 minutes in colder parts up north, leaving residents vulnerable. The three stages—frostnip, superficial frostbite and deep frostbite—warn that immediate shelter and care are needed.  WXYZ
